Varicose Veins Q & A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged veins, often in the legs, that are bigger and potentially more serious than spider veins. They usually occur because of a failure in a valve, or valves, of the Great Saphenous Vein (GSV), a blood vessel on the inside of the thigh.

When the valves of the GSV don’t close properly, blood flows backwards down the lower legs and causes the vein to bulge.

The process of blood flowing backward is called venous reflux. If varicose veins are left untreated, the pooled blood can cause tissue breakdown, skin discoloration around the ankles, and ulcers.

What are the common signs of varicose veins?

In most cases, varicose veins appear on your skin and are very noticeable. Other common signs and symptoms of varicose veins in your legs include:

  • Aching
  • Throbbing
  • Cramping
  • Heaviness
  • Swelling
  • Rash
  • Darkening of the skin
  • Restless legs

Many of the symptoms worsen if you stand or sit for extended periods.

How do you treat varicose veins?

To evaluate your GSV, Dr. Singh uses an ultrasound to determine the problem’s location. This process allows him to recommend the best course of treatment.

First, in most cases, Dr. Singh recommends wearing compression stockings to manage your symptoms. They help improve blood flow in your legs. You can buy them online or at pharmacies and medical supply stores.

Visual sclerotherapy is a common treatment for varicose veins that involves receiving injections directly into your veins. Dr. Singh also uses cutting-edge technology known as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that targets the problem veins with concentrated laser energy.

How does EVLT work for varicose veins?

First, Dr. Singh applies a local anesthetic to your skin and makes a small incision. Then he inserts the laser fiber directly into your vein through a small tube, or catheter.

As he slowly withdraws the fiber, it gives off precise laser energy to the damaged vein wall and seals it off. Your blood is automatically re-routed to healthier veins.

The procedure is nearly painless and takes 45-60 minutes to complete, requiring virtually no downtime.

After an EVLT procedure, Dr. Singh often recommends continuing to wear compression stockings for some time to supplement your treatment and achieve optimal results.

EVLT procedures are considered a true medical problem and is often covered by insurance. Elysium Aesthetics and Vein Care is in-network with most major insurance carriers and in many cases considered a tier 1 provider.
